„Eating at home“ (En)
a Cross- Cultural Performance

Without any pre announcement or acknowledgement in the middle of a major city a typical Korean style full
course dinner is set on a mattress.
Artists start to eat as if they are eating at home. Any guest and willing participant can spontaneously join in.
Korea has been celebrating a highly developed culinary art for thousands of years and she is well known for
her friendliness to visitors.
“Eating” is not a simple taking of nourishment in Korea. As it is in every antique civilization, it is far more than
that. “Food” is something that one “Shares“ and therefore Eating“ is an utmost human ritual. Every meal is a
celebration.
It is quite impossible for a Korean to imagine eating alone without any company. Taking a meal is highly
human, a friendly and important event between people.
This very action can create friends, colleagues of life, a community of compassionate people from different
cultures and provide an opportunity to learn and respect other cultures with an open heart, in the middle of a
wide and open city.
The project “eating at home” is precisely a creative symbol for the dialogue between cultures. Art can only
create symbols and formulate suggestions, that the viewers may learn to rely more on the reference of one’s
own actual experience.

Performance Konzept: Mitten in der Stadt findet
Korea zeigt sich schon seit tausenden von Jahren mit hoher Eßkultur als Gastfreundliches Land. „Essen“
bedeutet in Korea „Teilen“ (Sharing) einer wichtigsten Handlung zwischen den Menschen.
Das Leben in Korea kann man sich kaum vorstellen ohne gemeinsames Essen.
Freund, Geschäftpartner, Familien knüpten ihre Bande beim gemeinsamen Essen.
Essen knüpft Menschlichkeit, Freundschaft, Warmherzlichkeit.
Mit dieser Aktion soll zwischen Menschen aus verschiedenen Kulturen eine Gemeinschaft, Freundschaft
geschlossen werden.
Man trifft sich mit Menschen aus anderen Kulturen lernt von einander, findet zueinander.
Zur Performance wird im Zentrum der Städte auf der Strasse eine typische Koreanische Situation einer
Mahlzeit mit Künstler aufgebaut, mit Sitzmatratzen und Sitz-Esstisch. Der Künstler nimmt hier ein Platz und
beginnt zu essen. Die Freunde und Passanten sind eingeladen, sich dazu zu treten und mit zu essen.
Gleichzeitig ist mit den Protesten von Passanten zu rechen und mit Aupöbelungen und Fremdfeindlichkeit.
Die Aktion will aus dies zeigen und daran erinnern, daß verschiedenen individuelle Formen nur Träger eines
gemeinsamen menschlichen Inhalts sind…
Gerade das Projekt „eating at home“ könnte ein Künstlerisches Zeichen für die Möglichkeit eines Dialogs
zwischen den Kulturen sein.
